    POLISHED MAMMOTH TOOTH
    Mammuthus primigenius
    Pleistocene
    Venice, Florida, USA
    3.14 x 2.95 x 2.95 inches (8 x 7.5 x 7.5 cm)

    This polished section of a tooth from a Woolly Mammoth was found in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Venice, Florida. The surface of the tooth has been worked smooth to highlight the "bread slice" form and shows a cross-sectional aspect of the dentition. This sizable piece has much of the root preserved. It is a good representation of this type of material, and there are barnacles on the underside in testimony of its aquatic origin. This molar section from the ancient elephantine creature is unique and interesting.
