    Description

    Mastodon Tooth
    Mammut americanum
    Pleistocene
    Florida, USA

This massive molar from an American Mastodon has prominent crowns on the dark tooth indicative of the ancient creature's browsing diet. The excellent example of prehistoric dentition from the Mammut americanum has a dark, almost black, coloration over most of the tooth cap with some patches of brown and even cream subtly adding variety to the fossil. The remnant is in fabulous condition with even only slight wear of the "nipple" protrusions which distinguish Mastodon from Mammoth teeth. There is an elegance to the shape and form of a Mastodon tooth, and this stout molar nearly 7 inches (17.8 cm) in length is quite large. The extinction of this group of proboscidean may have been related to predation by early humans. The Mastodon is an iconic beast from the Ice Age, and this is a great fossil specimen and a great way to remember their reign.
    Overall Measurements: 6.69 x 3.54 x 3.34 inches (17 x 9 x 8.5 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
