    Description

    Mammoth Tusk Tip
    Mammuthus primigenius
    Pleistocene
    Alaska

While sectioned pieces of Mammoth Tusk are not necessarily uncommon, more complete specimens such as this tip are quite unusual. The fossil is really a "best of both worlds" case as the exterior has a smooth polished finish and exhibits intricate patterns with rich coloration, including magnificent blue hues, while the raw end features a splintering of bleached "wood-like" layers of the internal material inside the ancient modified tooth. Obviously, this was the tip of a rather large Mammoth Tusk as it is very robust in girth. The piece weighs 5.5 lbs. (2.5 kg), and the specimen terminates in a massive and curved smooth tip. There is a small patch of fill on in the middle of the tip end and the usual cracking along the shaft of the prehistoric "log" only adding to its authentic look. The partial tusk measures 17 inches (43 cm) on a line and is very thick and solid. This is a huge chunk of an ancient Mammoth Tusk.
    Overall Measurements: 17.0 x 3.5 x. 3.0 inches (43.18 x 8.89 x 7.62 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
