Description

Juvenile Woolly Mammoth Tooth
Mammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska, USA

This charming juvenile molar of Mammuthus primigenius is preserved within a section of bony mandible and originated from Pleistocene deposits of Alaska. Representing early developmental stage growth of this iconic "Ice Age" proboscidean, this specimen offers a rare glimpse into the dentition of young mammoths, whose remains are far less commonly encountered than those of mature individuals. Measuring approximately 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) across the grinding surface, the tooth exhibits the characteristic "sliced bread" structure, with well-defined enamel ridges visible across the chewing surface. The fossil retains an exceptional, complete form, with the small tooth securely set in matrix, enhancing both its scientific integrity and visual appeal. Such well-preserved juvenile examples of Mammuthus primigenius are uncommon, making this specimen a particularly engaging and instructive representation of such Pleistocene megafauna.
Measurements: 2.96 x 2.46 x 2.30 inches (7.52 x 6.25 x 5.83 cm)
