Description
Fossil Rhinoceros Skull with Bite MarksHyracodon nebrascensis
Early Oligocene
Orellan Member, White River Group
Brule Formation
Pennington County, South Dakota, USA
Hyracodon nebrascensis is a relative of the early rhinoceros dating to the Early Oligocene out of the famed White River Badlands of South Dakota and represents a lightly built cursorial lineage distinct from modern rhinoceroses. This impressive skull, measuring 11 inches (28 cm) in length, displays an elongated rostrum and dentition characteristic of the genus, offering insight into an herbivorous lifestyle adapted to open habitats during a period of significant climatic transition. Particularly striking are two distinct puncture marks near the top of the cranium, most likely predatory bite traces, and providing rare behavioral evidence of predator-prey interactions in the Oligocene ecosystem. Such marks suggest an encounter with a larger carnivorous mammal, likely an entelodont or similarly formidable omnivore, capturing a moment of ecological tension frozen deep in time. Expertly prepared and relatively minimally restored, and presented on a custom metal armature, the specimen combines strong anatomical preservation with a most compelling paleo-biological narrative, making the superlative skull both scientifically relevant and obviously visually striking.
Overall Measurements: 11.02 x 10.24 x 4.13 inches (28.00 x 26.00 x 10.50 cm)
