Description

Fossil Camel Skull
Poebrotherium sp.
Oligocene
Chadron Formation
Sioux County, Nebraska, USA

This skull from the amusingly named "Grass Eating Beast" represents a fossil camel known as the Poebrotherium dating to the Oligocene. This fossil is out of the famed Chadron Formation in Sioux County, Nebraska. This skull measures some 5 inches (12.7 cm) across and features four rows of tiny teeth in two upper and two lower lines. The grayish bony offering with slight pinkish tones has suitable restoration with the majority near the snout. The camelid mammal was first found by the fur trapper Samuel Culbertson, who sent bones to his family, where they later made it to legendary paleontologist Joseph Leidy igniting his interest in White River Badlands fauna. Leidy identified the material and determined the creatures were likely related to modern llamas. This smaller and thinner fossil is high in both intrigue and 'cute' factor. The skull exhibits minor lateral compression and is equally nice on both sides, although one side is a bit more convex than the other, which is flatter.
Measurements: 5.03 x 2.70 x 1.86 inches (12.77 x 6.86 x 4.73 cm)
