Description

Fossil Bison Skull
Bison occidentalis
Pleistocene/Holocene
Iowa, USA

Bison occidentalis is considered by some to be an intermediate species bridging the antique bison, Bison antiquus, and the modern American bison, Bison bison-the largest extant land animal in North America. Bison occidentalis roamed the "Great Bison Belt," which ran from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, dating back 9,000 years. This fine example of a skull represents a MALE dating to the intermediate Ice Age, some 6,500 years ago. The Pleistocene fossil is large and colorful with a relatively complete structure, a lively golden-brown coloration, and rather excellent preservation. The monstrous maxilla features two lengthy curved horn cores, five rooted teeth, two prominent eye sockets, and a partially intact nasal protrusion. The skull is naturally artistic with an inherent charm and "southwestern" appeal. Exhibiting no visible signs of any major repairs or restoration, this specimen out of Iowa has a lot going for it. A highly collectible and decorative example, this skull would be a very impactful wall hanging feature for any room with a rustic vibe to its decor.
Overall Measurements: 23.23 x 22.44 x 7.87 inches (59.00 x 57.00 x 20.00 cm)
