Description

Fossil Bison Skull
Bison occidentalis
Pleistocene/Holocene
Iowa, USA

Bison occidentalis is considered by some to be an intermediate species bridging the antique bison, Bison antiquus and the modern American bison, Bison bison - the largest extant land animal in North America. Bison occidentalis roamed the "Great Bison Belt," which ran from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico dating back from 9,000 years. This fine example of a skull represents a male dating to the intermediate Ice Age some 6,500 years ago. The Pleistocene fossil is large and dramatic with a very complete structure, a pleasing softer brown coloration, and excellent preservation. The monstrous maxilla features two rather curvaceous horn cores, two fully complete sets of teeth, two prominent eye sockets, and a very intact nasal protrusion. The skull is naturally artistic with an inherent charm and southwestern appeal. Exhibiting no signs of repair or restoration, this specimen out of Iowa has everything going for it. One highly collectible example, the skull would be an ideal decorative wall hanging.
Measurements: 24.80 x 22.83 x 7.48 inches (63.00 x 58.00 x 19.00 cm)

More Information: The accompanying image is an artistic interpretation, based on knowledge from the fossil record and ancillary factors, of the potential appearance of the above extinct animal. Please note the rendering does not accompany the Lot.
