Description

Daphoenus

Daphoenus Fossil Skeleton
Daphoenus felinus
Oligocene
White River Formation
Shannon County, South Dakota, USA

Representing one of the most interesting varieties of mammal out of the Oligocene, the "bear-dog" was one of the most unique carnivores. The amphicyonid was not actually closely related to bears or dogs, but obviously exhibits characteristics of both animals. Out of the White River Badlands, known for its prolific vertebrate fossils, this remarkable specimen is very complete and displays an excellent level of preservation of the delicate bones, which amazingly have survived deposition, fossilization, erosion, collection, and mounting. Meticulous care was employed along with obvious expertise to bring this prehistoric predator ‘back to life' as presented here on a custom metal armature. From a private serious collection, this is a museum-quality, and investment-grade, vertebrate fossil worthy of display in a prominent setting. Anyone familiar with the famed White River Badlands will find this skeleton of Daphoenus felinus something uncommon, unusual, and outstanding for an acquisition. Dating back over 20 million years ago, the fossil, with a striking visual impact, takes us back in time.
