Description
Cave Bear SkullUrsus spelaeus
Pleistocene
Austria
This robust and ominous skull represents a Cave Bear of the Ursus spelaeus variety from Austria. Evidencing considerable restoration, this fossil has been expertly repaired and prepared for final display several times, with the result being the stunning specimen measuring a rather substantial 16 inches (41 cm) in length and weighing a considerable 9 kilograms (20 pounds). The lower jaw contains real teeth and bone, which is relatively uncommon with such vertebrate skulls, and even the upper is real, albeit highly reconstructed, as are most of the teeth. The mottled golden-brown parts of this skull are classic representations of such iconic prehistoric bears that were hastened to extinction by competition for the caves the creatures inhabited - including humans of the time. The "true" Cave Bear, unlike many examples of other species out of Russia, is a European type that stands as a highly collectible variety. Even just a skull of the Pleistocene beast is very impressive.
Overall Measurements: 16.14 x 9.45 x 8.27 inches (41.00 x 24.00 x 21.00 cm)
