Description

Basilosaurus Jaw Section
Basilosaurus cetoides
Eocene
Morocco

This impressive lower jaw section of Basilosaurus cetoides measures approximately 27 inches (69 cm) in length and represents half of the mandible of this archaic Eocene whale. The fossil displays a pleasing mottled golden coloration that accentuates the dramatic contours of the bone and the formidable dentition for which the species is known. Several large, complex teeth remain in place, rising in rugged, mountainous crowns that reflect the predatory adaptations of one of the earliest fully aquatic whales. Fully restored to display quality, the jaw has been carefully prepared to present a cohesive and visually striking appearance. Mounted on a custom metal armature, the specimen is showcased to emphasize both its impressive scale and the remarkable dental architecture that defines this iconic marine mammal.
Jaw Measurements: 27.17 x 7.48 x 1.97 inches (69.00 x 19.00 x 5.00 cm)
