DescriptionGIANT FOSSIL GASTROPOD PAIR
The ancient Campanile is considered to be the largest gastropod that ever lived, reaching lengths of up to 2 feet. Its elegant tapering form and attractively textured and robustly contoured shell have made it a great favorite with fossil collectors. This is a particularly fine specimen boasting two good shells in an aesthetic pose. Like most French Eocene fossils, they boast a lovely clean chalky white color and are resting in an appropriately seashore-like limestone matrix, teeming with much smaller gastropods, bivalves and other marine life. One of the specimens has a 1-inch section of restoration at the tip and the larger of the two is almost entirely free from the matrix, of good size at 21 inches in length.
Estimate: $2,400 - $3,000.
