VERY RARE FOSSIL FISH

Tingziao Formation, Guizhou Province, People's Republic of China
This is a superb example of a very rare armored bony fish, found occasionally in the famed keichosaur beds of the Guizhou province in China. The preservation of the scale detail is fantastic, some even appearing to retain their natural lifelike luster, and the prominent armor around the head is raised from the matrix in dramatic three-dimensionality. The fins and tail similarly show excellent preservation and detail, and there are even some of the long sharp teeth visible amidst the bony mass of the head area. The strong black coloring of the 9-inch long specimen stands out in pleasing contrast to the 10¾ x 5½ inch gray matrix making it an all-round winner in terms of rarity, superb preservation and preparation quality and aesthetic appeal.
