Ouled Abdoun Basin, Sidi Daoud Region, Morocco
Since shark skeletons are composed of mostly cartilage, the only thing commonly preserved in the fossil record is their teeth. Arranged just as they lay on the ocean floor, this natural assemblage of over 24 fossilized shark teeth has been prepared to give the greatest dramatic effect. Many of the well-preserved examples were painstakingly freed from the enclosing limestone to protrude, almost free-standing, from the matrix. Varying in size from 2 to 3½ inches in length, each retains good enamel coverage and displays the characteristic tiny pair of subsidiary teeth on either side off the main one - side cusps. The Otodus obliquus was a member of the Lamniformes order, or mackerel sharks, the same order as today's Great White, and from the size of these teeth it was obviously an even more fearsome sea-going predator. The plaque itself measures 21 x 17 inches.
Estimate: $2,800 - $3,400.
