Description

RARE FOSSIL GAR WITH FOSSIL FISH
    Lepisosteus sp. & Knightia sp.
    Eocene, Green River Formation
    Wyoming, USA

The Green River Formation, an ancient system of three, freshwater lakes dating back to the Eocene some 40 to 50 million years ago, is undoubtedly the most prolific locality for fossil fish anywhere in the world. Of course, it yields numerous other fossils in addition to the fish, but it is the diversity and abundance of the fish that make this location the Lagerst├Ątte so well known to fossil collectors. Some varieties of fossil fish are certainly less common than others, but it is the discovery of a truly rare fossil fish that is worthy of the most excitement. Gars are just such rarely encountered fossils. As a fossil Gar, this specimen is exceptional in terms of size, quality and presentation, it measures 27 inches (68.58 cm) in length. In this tableau, that majestic Gar, is flanked by an entire school of Knightia: a herring or sardine equivalent common to Fossil Lake. The hard and lustrous diamond shaped scales of the Gar are phenomenally preserved, as are the other details of the various fish in the plate. Gars are extreme rarities in the fossil record of the Green River Formation, and a superb specimen coupled with a school of Knightia is even more of a rarity.
    Overall Measurements: 53.13 x 36.5 x 3 inches (134.94 x 92.71 x 7.62 cm)

    Estimate: $20,000 - $25,000.
