Description

    Rare and Large Fossil Fish
    Phareodus encaustus
    Eocene, Green River Formation
    Wyoming, USA

Although fossil fish are tremendously abundant in the Green River Formation, some varieties are very common, while other varieties are quite rare. Phareodus is one such example, and the largest and best of these are really few and far between. This predator's dominance is easily confirmed with one look at its large pointed teeth, which unquestioningly proves it had a carnivorous diet. The location of its rear-placed fins made it well suited for catching and eating other fish, so it is not surprising that scales (from other fish) are consistently found in the stomach contents of Phareodus. This robust specimen exhibits the dark color and fine detail so characteristic of the famed "18 inch" layer of the Green River Formation, which is known for the superior fossils it produces. This large Phareodus measures a stout 21 inches (53.3 cm) and is embedded in a fine block of crisply prepared shale, suitable for wall mounting, with or without framing. This is a coveted variety of Green River fish and an exceptional example: it is relatively complete and exhibits extremely fine detail.
    Overall Measurements: 31.5 x 22.3 x 1.3 inches (80.0 x 56.5 x 3.2 cm)
