Description

Prehistoric Fish with Shrimp
Cocodus insignis & Carpopenaeus
Upper Cretaceous
Hgula, Byblos, Lebanon

This dual fossil plate features one unusual prehistoric fish and four shrimp relatively close in appearance to the modern-day variety. The rare fish genus died out during the Cretaceous and had quite a look with a sort of armored head and a bare body. The mysterious fish presented here shows a pronounced raised head coming off the tan rock, and the quartet of shrimp surround the fish near the periphery. Such fossil examples from the quarries of Lebanon are natural in appearance and exhibit relatively little restoration. This single Cocodus and four Carpopenaeus offer one amazing association from the Lebanon Lagerstätte.
