Description

    POLISHED MEGA-SHARK TOOTH
    Carcharocles megalodon
    Miocene
    Ocean River, South Carolina

As big as a Greyhound bus, the fearsome Megalodon vastly outsized its nearest modern equivalent, the Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias). Based on the similarity of the ancient and modern teeth, the two species were long thought to be related, but a new genus (Carcharocles) introduced in 1995 relies on a theory of parallel evolution to explain the similarity, and posits the extinct broad-toothed Mako Shark (Isurus hastalis) as the Great White's likely ancestor. All that remains to us of this ancient monster today are its teeth, the cartilaginous skeleton having decomposed long before it could be preserved in the fossil record. It's no surprise that these teeth have become highly sought-after collector's items, and this is a particularly fine example. The polished enamel no longer quite retains its full coverage but more than makes up for that with terrific coloring: dark and pale gray streaked and patched with blue and highlighted by several gorgeous splashes of vivid orange. A fine large specimen, it measures 5½ inches along the diagonal.
