Description
Pachycormus FossilPachycormus bollensis
Lower Jurassic
Posidonienschiefer Formation
Holzmaden, Bavaria, Germany
Dating to the Early Jurassic and out of the renowned "Holzmaden Shale" in Germany, this unique marine creature represents an extinct ray-finned fish called Pachycormus. With short teeth likely designed to clutch its prey, the variety is considered to have been a generalist predator in the prehistoric oceans it would have once patrolled. The body of the massive fish measures 52 inches (132 cm), while the large matrix piece is much bigger overall. The fossil exhibits some apparent stomach contents amid its many disarticulated preserved bones. On a thick matrix with a wavy and undulating, irregular edge, this has much to like about it, not to mention the variety is inherently rare. The fossil was likely removed from the matrix for preparation and then put back into the background rock, which is not only the 'classic' black color but full of subtle, swirling patterns that make the presentation all the more artistic. Perhaps the most unusual attribute, however, of this enormous fossil offering is the fact that this big fish displays not the typical dorsal orientation but rather a ventral position allowing the viewer to literally look down on the fish as though it were still swimming. This is most atypical for such marine fossils and is another reason this particular specimen is extremely unique. Technical inspection indicates two linear repairs of the fins, but the piece is in very good condition overall. The small but numerous teeth are visible and in fine shape as well. The brownish fossil remnants contrast nicely with the matte black hue of the matrix. This is certain to be a major conversation starter and sure to be a showpiece for any collection or décor.
Overall Measurements: 69.00 x 40.00 x 1.25 inches (175.26 x 101.60 x 3.17 cm)
