Description

    Megalodon Shark Tooth
    Carcharocles megalodon
    Miocene
    Morgan River, South Carolina, USA

Few terms elicit a response like the mere mention of the name "Megalodon" can. The ancestral Great White is a widely known apex predator of the ancient oceans, and shark teeth are, without a doubt, one of the most recognizable and appreciated of all vertebrate fossils. Since sharks have cartilaginous skeletons, teeth are typically the only parts of these creatures which appear in the fossil record. The top quality tooth seen here is a bona fide specimen slightly over 5 inches (12.8 cm) long. The root is a muted brown and shows nominal cracking, to be expected. The enamel of the tooth is a gun metal gray with a hint of blue. The serrations are sharp and complete up and down both edges of the tooth, and there is only one small, but stable, crack near the root. This is a nice fossil shark tooth of considerable size and quality. The reverse face is pristine with no damage. The tooth comes with a custom wood and brass stand for displaying the piece most effectively.
    Overall Measurements: 5 x 4.1 x 1.1 inches (12.8 x 10.5 x 2.8 cm)
