Description
Megalodon Shark ToothOtodus megalodon
Miocene
Morgan River
South Carolina, USA
This fossilized tooth belonged to Otodus megalodon, the largest predatory shark to ever inhabit Earth's oceans. Estimated to have reached lengths exceeding 50 feet-and in some cases, over 60 feet-Megalodon was a formidable apex predator of the Miocene seas. Based on the commonly accepted ratio of approximately 10 feet of body length per inch of tooth, the original shark from which this specimen came likely measured at least 60 feet long. The tooth exhibits excellent preservation, with a well-defined root and blade, and retains the impressive size and robust form characteristic of the species. Fossils from the Morgan River area are highly regarded for their condition and coloration, making this a desirable specimen for both paleontological and private collections.
