    Description

    LEBANESE NEEDLE FISH
    Rhynchodercetis sp.
    Upper Cretaceous
    Hgula, Byblos, Lebanon

This incredible needle fish from Lebanon belongs to the Dercetidae family of higher bony fishes characterized by long, spindly, eel-shaped bodies which can contain 60 to 80 vertebrae. This 100 million year old fossil fish specimen exhibits a pronounced arching curve of its spine which terminates in a long rostrum (meaning "beak") with different size jaws. Most likely a predator, Rhynchodercetis is a very unusual fossil fish. This particular specimen features some very detailed fins protruding from the body both dorsally and ventrally in addition to a complete and detailed caudal tail fin. This specimen exhibits no restoration or preparation of any kind and is essentially just as it was excavated from the Lebanese quarry in which it was found. If straight, the fish would measure 21.25 inches (53.98 cm). The rock encasing this fossil is 19 inches (48.26 cm) x 9.5 inches (24.13 cm). It comes with a Certificate of Authenticity which confirms it as Memoire du Temps number 5530 and a signed copy of the hardcover book The Fossils of Lebanon.
