Apateopholis sp.
    Upper Cretaceous
    Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon

This little 100 million year old fossil fish from Lebanon is Apateopholis and seemingly just an average sized slender fish. However, there is much more to this ideally sized small fossil. With an elongated head due to its long rostrum ("beak") that could reach almost half the entire length of its body, this specimen is already unique. It features a big pair of eyes and jaws that are equal in length. This particular variety went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, along with the dinosaurs, and has no modern relative. This higher bony fish features especially dark preservation of the head and tail and shows excellent detail of the skeletal structure. This fossil specimen has not been restored and is just as it came out of the rock quarry. It measures 6.375 inches (16.19 cm) tip to tail, and the matrix measures 8 inches (20.32 cm) x 3.125 inches (7.94 cm). The fossil comes with a Certificate of Authenticity bearing Memoire du Temps number 5524 as well as a signed copy of the hardcover book The Fossils of Lebanon.

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]

    Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000.
