Description

    LARGE MULTIPLE FOSSIL FISH PLATE
    Diplomystus sp. Knightia sp.
    Eocene
    Green River Formation, Wyoming

This beautifully plate of tan limestone matrix displays two species that inhabited the freshwater lakes of the Green River Formation of Wyoming. Over 48 million years ago, the Southwest Wyoming region was a series of interconnected freshwater lakes, home to an abundant variety of marine life. Today the area represents one of the richest and best preserved formations in the fossil record. The fish included here display the unparalleled skill of the local preparators in uncovering every detail of the animals' fine bony structure and the beautiful aesthetic contrast of the dark brown fossils "swimming" in an expanse of cream-colored limestone. The two species, Diplomystus and Knightia, are both herring-like fish that look similar but have different styles of fins and skulls. The largest fish on the plate measures 5 inches long and the plate itself measures 27 x 19 inches.
