Description
LARGE MULTI-FISH PLATE - WALL SIZE PLATEDiplomystus dentatus, Priscacara serrata
Lower Eocene - Green River Formation - 56 MYA
Kemmerer, Wyoming
This large, buff plate with ten beautifully preserved fossil fish from two different genera is a veritable fossil aquarium in micritic limestone. The four larger fish are adult Diplomystus dentatus and the smaller "bluegill" types are Priscacara serrata. Eight of the ten are swimming "right-side" up, while the remaining two are acting contrary by seeming to swim "up-side down." The largest Diplomystus dentatus measures 18.5 x 8.4 inches (47 x 21.3 cm), while the Priscacara serrata are all about 5 inches (12.7 cm) long.
This spectacular plate is very unusual not only for it's size but also because all fish are as found - this is the natural layout captured in stone. The only preparation was necessary to expose the fish fully and to stabilize the slab as a single plaque. This exquisite fossil plate is surrounded by a wood frame and is ready for wall mounting, either vertically or horizontally.
Measurements: 91 x 60 x 2.75 inches (231 x 152 x 7 cm)
Provenance: From a Private San Francisco Collection
