DescriptionLARGE MEGA-SHARK TOOTH
Ogeechee River, Georgia, USA
Picture a shark the size of a city bus, with a mouth big enough for a person to walk into, lined with several rows of these fearsome hand-sized teeth: that is the Megalodon, the greatest hunter of the planet's oceans who reigned supreme 15 million years ago. With a cartilaginous skeleton unpreserved by the fossil record, all that remains of this monster are its teeth, but what teeth they are - no wonder its name in Greek means "big tooth". Despite the hazardous conditions under which they must be recovered, in the cold murky depths of the sounds around the Carolinas and Virginias, they are highly sought-after by collectors. From a less usual location, this is a superb example with lovely mottled brown and gray patination, good enamel coverage and excellent serrations. It also boasts a particularly fat heavy root section and measures an impressive 5 5/8 inches along the diagonal.
