Diplomystus dentatus
    Lower Eocene, Green River Formation
    Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA

Fossil Lake, as noted before, used to be part of the Gulf of Mexico, before the beach property moved a long way South. Now the area is dry and high (7000 feet plus) and although there are live fish in the creeks in the area - the real fishing takes place in the quarries. The "catch" are the beautifully preserved fossils, that are laboriously freed from their rocky homes, by eagle-eyed fossil diggers armed with razor-sharp, masonry hammers and chisels. This is a Diplomystus dentatus - a distant cousin of the herring family. Small "diplos" come from the shallow water deposits near the edge of what was the lake, and the big ones, like this - come from the deep-water sediments. At 15 plus inches this one is obviously from the "adults only" part of the lake. To facilitate display, the slab is neatly framed and ready for a wall presentation.
    Overall Measurements: 29 x 23 inches (73.66 x 58.42 cm)
    Offered at no reserve.

    Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.
