Description
Framed Fossil Fish MuralPriscacara serrata, & Knightia eocaena
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA
This square brick of Green River Formation sedimentary rock is nicely bordered with a dark wooden frame and contains a quintet of magnificent fossil fish inlaid among the highly textural matrix. Layer upon layer of thin "varves" of varying color and irregular form gives the piece an amazing depth and a significant dimension. Shades of beige and tan, as well as accents of orange and yellow, result in the background having a warm appearance enhanced by the numerous visible layers. This rock from the Fossil Lake Classic stone layer, typically from the famed 18" layers of the formation, represents the material well and is ideal for mural presentations. The piece, measuring 25 inches (63.5 cm) on both dimensions and weighing a substantial 15 kilograms (33 pounds), is fitted with a metal cleat system for secure wall hanging installation. Of course, the mural is all about the fossil fish that populate its complex organic surface. A relatively large Priscacara serrata measuring 9.5 inches (24 cm) long tip to tail is the dominant fish in this ancient aquatic scene, based on both size and rarity, which is also flanked by a quartet of smaller, more common Knightia eocaena 'swimming' in various directions.
Overall Measurements: 25.00 x 25.00 x 1.25 inches (63.50 x 63.50 x 3.17 cm)
