Description

Framed Fossil Amia Fish
Amia pattersoni
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA

Distinguished by both the rarity of the species and the exquisite quality of preservation, this superb fossil represents one of the most striking examples of the prehistoric bowfin, Amia pattersoni, from Wyoming's famed Green River Formation. The species derives its common name from its distinctive, elongated, arching dorsal fin, which extends nearly the length of the body. The present specimen displays exceptional preservation throughout, with clearly defined scales, a finely articulated caudal fin, and numerous large teeth still visible within the open jaws. The Limestone matrix exhibits a distinctive blue-gray coloration, indicating recovery from the bottom capping zone of the formation-a layer known for this subtle hue. When exposed to natural light, the stone develops a delicate bluish cast over time, further enhancing its visual appeal. Bowfins from the Green River Formation are represented by only two known species-Amia pattersoni and the shorter Cyclurus gurleyi-both highly prized among collectors for their rarity and anatomical completeness. Elegantly framed in tropical walnut and fitted with a cleat system for ease of wall display, the mural measures 57 x 37 inches (144 x 95 cm), with the specimen itself measuring 34.5 inches (87 cm) in length. A superb and scientifically important example of one of the formation's most elusive fossil fish, uniting rarity, preservation, and refined presentation.
Overall Measurements: 57.00 x 37.50 x 2.00 inches (144.78 x 95.25 x 5.08 cm)

Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern California Collector
