Description
Fossil StingrayHeliobatis radians
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA
A rare find for the quarries of the renowned Green River Formation Lagerstätte of Wyoming are fossil rays. This finer specimen contains an exceptional Fossil Stingray of the Heliobatis variety, along with a common Diplomystus fossil fish. This stingray measures a substantial 19 inches (48 cm), while this fish checks in at a respectable 7 inches (18 cm) from tip to tail. On a typical textural yellowish-tan matrix, the pair of aquatic fossils are nicely positioned. The stingray has had parts inlaid, which is common on such specimens, and has been restored, along with the fish from a different layer, with fine expertise. Any quality Fossil Stingray from Green River is a prized commodity, and this piece with irregular shape and strong visual aesthetics is something very special. A blacklight analysis only shows a "ring" around the ray inside the fan consistent with work performed to result in the spectacular specimen seen here. The back is affixed with a cleat hanging system for easy installation.
Overall Measurements: 25.59 x 21.26 x 1.18 inches (65 x 54 x 3 cm)
