    Description

    Fossil Stingray
    Cyclobatis oligodactylus
    Cretaceous
    Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon

This cute little fossil of a cartilaginous fish certainly resembles a modern stingray although is likely only distantly related to the rays. From a quarry in Lebanon, the fossil is superb with excellent preservation including a pronounced, raised spine. Unlike most other fossil varieties which require substantial levels of preparation and restoration for display, the specimens from the Lebanese quarries are presented as they come out of the ground with only minor cleaning performed to reveal the splendor of each fossil. This fine example has an offset nature to its shape which gives it a look of being in motion. The "Sun-Fish" exhibits the characteristic circular form typical of the skate-like creature due to the radial arrangement of the rays of its pectoral fins. Cyclobatis had numerous tiny teeth and a short tail with a venomous barb.
    Overall Measurements: 7.68 x 7.24 x 0.74 inches (19.50 x 18.40 x 1.89 cm)

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
