Description

    FOSSIL STINGRAY WITH FOSSIL FISH
    Cyclobatis oligodactylus & Euripholis boissieri
    Upper Cretaceous
    Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon

This exquisite stingray fossil has a small fossil fish in the corner of its matrix but also has the lagniappe of a large fossil fish (as well as another small fossil fish) on the back side of the rock. While not as well preserved as the stingray, this piece could essentially be displayed either side. The stingray, called Sun-Fish because of its quasi-circular shape due to the radial arrangement of the rays of the pectoral fins, has numerous teeth which are rather small with smooth crowns and slicing carina. This fossil is in virtually the same condition as when it came out of the ground as the fossils from this Lebanese quarry are essentially not restored at all - just natural. This piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity bearing Memoire du Temps number 5258 as well as a signed hardcover copy of the book The Fossils of Lebanon. Measurements: Rock - 11.5 x 10.25 x .875 inches (29.21 x 26.04 x 2.22 cm). Stingray - 4.75 x 3.25 inches (12.07 x 8.26 cm). Fish on the reverse is 6 inches (15.24 cm) long.

    Estimate: $4,000 - $5,000.
