Description
FOSSIL SHARK TEETH ASSEMBLAGEOtodus obliquus
Early Eocene
Khouribga, Morocco
This plate would be spectacular in its own right for just the 16 fossil shark teeth atop this rock. However, it is very likely there are more inside, if not layer upon layer. The fossil teeth here are from Otodus which was an early Mackerel shark and, arguably, an ancestor of the Great White. Fossil sharks are primarily known from fossil teeth as Otodus was composed of cartilage and not bone thus not likely to fossilize other than its teeth and sometimes is vertebral centra. The teeth of Otodus often show the signs of evolving serrations and are characteristically large with a triangular crown, smooth cutting edges and visible cusps on the roots. Many of these plaques, as are so many other Moroccan fossils, are composites and really made rather than found. In this case, the fossil shark teeth appear to be in their natural setting although pieces may have been reattached during cleaning and preparation for display. This grouping features fossilized teeth that woud be nice specimens individually. Together on the rock - this collection is an oustanding assemblage - and a great way to have a collection all in one place.
Measurements: 13.5 x 11.5 x 5 inches (34.29 x 29.21 x 12.7 cm) and 33 pounds (15 kg).
