Description

Fossil Ichthyosaur
Temnodontosaurus
Jurassic
Lyme Regis, Dorset, England

This fossil should conjure up thoughts of Mary Anning, who finally seems to be getting her due, albeit a couple of centuries too late, for her contribution to the science of Paleontology. This Ichthyosaur dates to the Jurassic and represents a marine reptile from the renowned Lyme Regis deposits of Dorset, England, where Anning did her now-legendary work. This specimen resides in a brick of grayish matrix weighing a considerable 50 pounds (22.7 kilograms). The darker charcoal gray fossil is dark and mysterious with just a hint of "dreariness," certainly representative of the locality from which it came. The elongated skeleton of this ancient sea creature is quite jumbled but relatively complete, with well-preserved bones, making it a consummate display specimen with a very compelling and historical underlying story to it. This fossil has been repaired at least once after the initial restoration and preparation but now is installation ready and rather visually striking. The variety was technically not Dinosaur since it lived in the sea and was not a member of the two official classifications containing the Dinosaurs, but it did live at the same time and definitely looks every bit the part. This version of the Loch Ness Monster-type creature is very intriguing.
Measurements: 37.01 x 11.02 x 1.57 inches (94.00 x 28.00 x 4.00 cm)
