An exceptional fossil Guitarfish, Rhombopterygia rajoides, from the Cretaceous deposits of Lebanon, a region celebrated for its beautifully preserved marine fossils. As members of the cartilaginous fish family, related to modern rays and skates, Guitarfishes are rarely fossilized, since cartilage decays far more readily than bone. This specimen represents one of only eight known species of fossil Guitarfish from Lebanon's Late Cretaceous strata. It is a large and impressive example, showing excellent articulation and clear definition of the fins and body outline-features seldom preserved in such clarity. A notable and scientifically important specimen, illustrating both the anatomical refinement and exceptional preservation typical of Lebanon's world-renowned marine fossil beds.
