Slightly raised off a dark and relatively thin, but fortunately stabilized, rocky matrix, this mysterious fossil fish represents the Semionotus variety and measures 5.5 inches (14 cm) from tip to tail. Very nice preservation characterizes the Jurassic fossil which exhibits amazing ganoid scales. This is an out-of-the-ordinary fish that does not resemble most others. Prominent in deposits from the Eastern United States, this example quarried from Massachusetts is a classic with much to like about it. An impressive invertebrate fossil, especially for a relatively small piece, the fossilized "ray-finned" fish representing the extinct genus is glossy black in contrast to its charcoal grayish background matrix.
