Green River Formation
Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA
Even though it is one of the more common varieties of fossil fishes from the Green River Formation, the Diplomystus is arguably the most elegant in its form. This example, which also happens to be extremely large, is also noteworthy for having a really dark grayish color over the surface of the rock, although the matrix is a gray-tan where the layers have been exposed to reveal the buried fossil. At nearly 18 inches (45 cm) long, the fish alone is massive, and the quality of preservation is confirmed by the raised spinal column and the amount of original bone material in relief from the host rock. This is a striking fossil fish in terms of size, quality and contrast. The rectangular brick is thick making the overall piece quite heavy.
