    Description

    Fossil Fish
    Cyclurus (Amia) kehreri
    Eocene
    Messel Pits, Germany

The Messel Pits, of Germany, are renowned for producing spectacular fossils with superb, including soft tissue, preservation. However, the oil shales in which the fossils are found are so delicate, the specimens must be collected and transferred to resin before the rock degrades away. This ancient fossil "bowfin" is Cyclurus kehreri and was found in the famous Lagerst├Ątte. This fossil fish measures 17 inches (43.2 cm) in length from tip to tail. The well-preserved example is dark brown with an oily appearance. The fossil is in a resin matrix and displayed in a black plastic box frame for wall hanging. There appears to be a repaired fissure in the resin that runs across the fish but which is stable and does not detract from the wonderful fossil. The detail is amazing as so much of the prehistoric fish was captured by the impression fossilizing process. This offering must be considered superlative, by most standards, and represents an important fossil from the unique locality. Cyclurus is similar to the Amia out of Wyoming's Green River Formation.
    Overall Measurements: 23.43 x 10.43 x 1.38 inches (59.50 x 26.50 x 3.50 cm)

    Provenance: Central Coast Collection

[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
