Fossil Fish
    Albertonia cupidina
    Early Triassic
    Sulphur Mountain Formation
    Wapiti Lake, British Columbia, Canada

This unique specimen is a very rare and seldom seen fossil fish from Canada. The uncommon Albertonia is endemic to the western provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. Fossils are only found in a narrow interval of the Phroso Member of the Sulphur Mountain Formation. Dating to the Early Triassic Period, Albertonia was a primitive teleost bony fish that evolved during the Mesozoic to become the dominant saltwater and freshwater fish present today. Like many primitive fish, the specimen features thick, rhomboid-shaped "ganoid" scales. Albertonia had a deep body with long pectoral fins and a well-developed caudal fin. Likely a strong but slow swimmer, the variety lived in moderate depths as a grazer/nibbler given the lack of pharyngeal teeth and a weak marginal dentition. This sizable example, at over 10 inches (25 cm) from snout to tail, sits in an irregular stone matrix. The well-preserved fossil fish has ample texture due to the pronounced bony scales, and the exaggerated fins are mostly intact. The virtually black fossilized skeleton is slightly camouflaged against the blackish-brown rock, but the overall effect is a dark and rich specimen. The fossil takes up most of the matrix which is only slightly larger than the outer dimensions of the ancient fish. The fossil was legally collected and exported from Canada with all the proper export permits from the Canadian Federal Government. This is a superb specimen with impeccable provenance.
