Description

FOSSIL FISH WITH PALM FLOWER
Priscacara serrata
Eocene, Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA

Another amazing piece from the acclaimed Green River Formation, this lovely, aquatic vignette features a standout Priscacara serrata "swimming" towards a big palm flower in this, not surprisingly, well-preserved piece of the legendary "18 inch" layer. Unlike many plates that simply exhibit fossil fish embedded in a slab of rock, this piece actually offers a "natural" underwater scene preserved just as it was some 40 to 50 million years ago during the Eocene. This ancient artwork is captured in a free-form matrix of shale and is suitable for display on a wall in any décor environment. The irregularly shaped rock has not been framed to highlight its rustic appeal. As typical of fossils from the "18 inch" layer, this presentation features dark brown fossils on a mottled sublime grayish background. The contrast in relief between the fossils and the matrix is striking. The "star" of this ancient underwater scene, the Priscacara serrata measures 5.25 inches (13.34 cm) long, and the palm covers a majority of the large plate. The piece has a wood backing for further reinforcement.
Overall Measurements: 29 x 21.5 x 1.14 inches (73.66 x 54.61 x 2.90 cm)
Offered at no reserve.
