Description

FOSSIL FISH WITH LEAVES
Knightia sp., Populas wilmattae, Sapindaceae family
Eocene
Green River Formation, Kemmerer, Wyoming

Most of the fossil quarries in Kemmerer, Wyoming, produce plenty of fossil fish with few plants because their quarries represent lake bottom sediments far from shore. However, another quarry in the Green River Formation produces fossils from near the shoreline; resulting in specimens where fish are found naturally positioned next to plant remains. This specimen from the shoreline quarry features a Knightia next to two leaves; one of a poplar and one of the soapberry family. The fish and plants have a natural brown contrast to the matrix and some of the venations on the leaves are still preserved; the largest leaf measures 7 ½ inches on the 9 x 4 inch matrix.
