Description
Fossil Fish SculptureDiplomystus dentatus & Knightia eocaena
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA
Quite large for a "spinner" specimen, this Fossil Fish Sculpture presented on a custom metal base weighs an astounding 58.5 pounds (26.6 kilograms) and is a study in contrasts with fossil fish seen on both sides, and the matrix having significantly different coloration on each side. On an irregular and natural rock from the iconic Green River Formation Lagerstätte in Wyoming, out of the "18-inch layer," this represents material from the Fossil Lake Classic Stone Layer, featuring multiple layers of stone texture and hues ranging from beige to tan. The primary side contains both a Diplomystus measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) flanked by a Knightia measuring 4.5 inches (11.4 cm), on an orangey background, while the reverse side contains a single Knightia measuring 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), on a much more typical lighter and mottled matrix. This is an incredible inlay accent item for any décor.
Overall Measurements: 20.50 x 14.50 x 4.00 inches (52.07 x 36.83 x 10.16 cm)
Estimate: $3,000 - up.
