Description
Fossil Fish PlatePhareodus encaustus, Mioplosus sp. & Diplomystus
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA
This massive plate of sedimentary rock out of the world-famous Green River Formation contains a trio of impressive and well-preserved fossil fish of the Phareodus, Mioplosus, and Diplomystus varieties on a tan and yellowish matrix with a subtle graininess. The largest and predaceous Phareodus measures tip to tail an astonishing 21 inches (53 cm) and features a rustic appearance, appropriate restoration, and a toothy mouth consistent with its aggressive nature. The rather smaller, yet still rather sizable, Mioplosus boasts a length of some 11 inches (28 cm) and is two-tone in gold and brown, has an open mouth, and exhibits a high level of preservation. The relatively tiny skeletal Diplomystus looks positioned to be prey itself soon. The thick rectangular brick is reinforced with a wood backing and is one unique aquatic diorama. The decorative appeal of these major marine fossils can really not be understated.
Overall Measurements: 30.79 x 19.29 x 1.38 inches (78.20 x 49.00 x 3.50 cm)
