Description
Fossil Fish PlateDiplomystus dentatus
Eocence Age
Green River Formation
Wyoming
This solitary example of a fossil fish from the Green River Formation is a superb ancient herring known as a Diplomystus. The preserved skeleton is in very good condition and has been expertly prepared. As specimens of the type go, this is a very appealing version. The fossil fish itself measures a substantial 9 inches (23 cm) from tip to tail making it not only an aesthetic piece but also a relatively large example. The matrix has tone shifts and a mottled surface with lots of layering and relief. The fish is centered in the sedimentary brick which may have come from the "18-inch" layer of the Green River lagerstätte. A wonderful specimen to be sure, this fairly complete skeleton has a pronounced vertebral column and a limited amount of visible restoration. The combination of quality and size is hard to beat with this one.
Overall Measurements: 13.00 x 8.00 x 0.59 inches (33.02 x 20.32 x 1.50 cm)
Offered at no reserve.
[Scale: 1 inch, with mark at 1 cm]
