Description
Fossil Fish
Fossil Fish PairNematonotus longispinus
Upper Cretaceous
Hgula, Byblos, Lebanon
This incredible "split" fish specimen is rather unique, if for no other reason than each side is a fabulous fossil in its own right. The natural matched pair has a rustic nature due to the locality in Lebanon that produced them which is known for top quality fossils which often require minimal further restoration. This variety of ancient fish dates to the Upper Cretaceous and is characterized as small to medium sized fish with rather laterally compressed bodies. The group were likely predatory and did not survive past the end of that geologic period. This 100 million-year-old fossil offers two very well-preserved examples of Nematonotus longispinus with rich golden coloration preserved in a grainy tan sedimentary rock matrix. Other than the vertebral column in place on one side and absent on the other, these two are mirror images. The stone bricks housing these two spectacular fish fossils has been sealed with a fortifying resin backing. This is an exceptional example of the fossil variety.
