Description

Fossil Fish Mural
Diplomystus dentatus
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA

Out of the world-renowned Green River Formation of Wyoming, this immense fossil fish mural has a pair of two well-preserved specimens of the Diplomystus variety, the larger one measuring some 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) and the smaller one measuring about 14 inches (35.6 cm), from tip to tail. A highly impactful and seriously decorative example of material from the famed Lagerstätte, this fine inlaid work of a most artistic nature has been fashioned with a laminated Birch backing and framed with African Wenge hardwood, which is, effectively, the same coloration as the fossils. The massive mural measures nearly 67 inches (170 cm) wide and has been beveled for wall hanging without any need of a secondary cleat system. The sedimentary background is mottled in coloration and has an obvious texture due to many iconic thin layers representing seasonal depositions known as varves. With an abundance of gray and taupe hues, the piece is essentially neutral and, therefore, ideal for inclusion in virtually any interior décor. Parallel linear fracture lines cross the surface of the rock at consistent angles and represent a geological syncline that was present in the quarry such that the pattern is natural. Solution permeated from the cracks, resulting in color variations along the lines. This is one outstanding work of natural art.
Overall Measurements: 66.75 x 47.75 x 2.75 inches (169.54 x 121.28 x 6.98 cm)
