Diplomystus dentatus and Knightia eoceana
    Green River Formation

The classic Green River Formation has been long known for the fabulous fossil fish its quarries produce. This plate is a fine example from the coveted 18 inch layer and has a large Diplomystus (herring) and a good-sized Knightia (sardine). Furthermore, the Knightia is the State Fossil of Wyoming. In this scene, the large fish is preserved in excellent form with an outstanding raised spinal column. There is evidence of the minor repairs and restoration common to the process of prepping fish fossils. With two such nice specimens, this piece is considerably above average. The orientation of the fish to one anoher as well as the character of the rock this is an excellent item.
    Measurements: 13 x 12.75 x .5 inches (33.02 x 32.39 x 1.27 cm). Large fish - 10.5 inches (26.67 cm) long. Small fish - 5.5 inches (13.97 cm) long. Offered at no reserve.
Provenance: A Private Texas Collection; Self-collected
