Description
Fossil FishMioplosus sp.
Eocene
Green River Formation
Lincoln County, Kemmerer, Wyoming, USA
11.97 x 7.68 x 0.59 inches (30.40 x 19.50 x 1.51 cm)
A superb example of Mioplosus, this fossil fish displays exceptional preservation with crisp skeletal detail and a beautifully articulated form. Dark, well-defined bone contrasts strikingly against the pale Limestone matrix, allowing each fin ray and structural element to stand out with remarkable clarity, while the clean, centered presentation enhances overall visual impact. Often regarded as one of the more formidable predatory fish of prehistoric lake systems, Mioplosus is interpreted as a solitary, aggressive piscivore in maturity, functioning as the aquatic equivalent of a modern F/A-18 Hornet, built for speed, precision, and dominance, despite an early life spent in nearshore schooling environments. This dynamic life history adds depth to an already compelling specimen, which stands out both scientifically and aesthetically. Highly prized among collectors for its rarity and strong display presence, examples of this quality are increasingly sought after, making this an outstanding addition for any advanced fossil collection.
Estimate: $500 - up.
