Big, bold, and beautiful, this massive fossil fish from the Green River Lagerstätte represents the common variety Diplomystus, although this is NO common example. Measuring 17 inches (43 cm) from tip to tail, the monstrous fish is very well-preserved and somewhat inflated as the piece, in relief, on the rock has a dimensionality, especially with respect to the bones of the skull and its raised vertebral column. Deep brown in coloration, highly contrasting against the much lighter mottled, tan-yellowish matrix, the specimen has been expertly prepared for display. Extremely large for the type, the fossil fish is dramatic and impactful. Dating to the Eocene, this was a significant fish living in the trio of freshwater lakes 40 million years ago.
