Description

Fossil Fish Aspiration
Mioplosus labracoides & Diplomystus dentatus
Eocene
Green River Formation
Wyoming, USA

A relatively rare phenomenon in the fossil record, this fossil fish aspiration - one fish choking on another for its final meal - is preserved for all-time in this specimen from the Green River Formation Lagerstätte. The larger fish measures a stout 10 inches (25 cm) in overall length although it is missing a part of its tail. The major perch-like Mioplosus here is dining on a Diplomystus, or what can be seen of it, and the scene originally took place some 40 to 50 million years ago during the Eocene in the series of freshwater lakes.
Overall Measurements: 16.34 x 10.63 x 0.59 inches (41.50 x 27.00 x 1.50 cm)
